석운동은 조재무, 최용준, 홍기웅 세 작가가 포착한 도시와 삶의 단면들을 어떻게 전달할 것인가를 고민하다, 골목을 떠올렸다.
아마도 작가들이 그러했을 것처럼(때로는 우연히, 때로는 계획적으로), 길을 따라 사이사이 건물들이 보이고 방향을 틀 때마다 다른 풍경을 마주하는 골목을 만들면 어떨까?
우리는 지붕 사이 유리로 들어온 빛이 나무 보가 노출된 천정을 통과하며 생겨난 그림자에 주목했다. 매시간 다른 방향과 모양으로 쏟아지는 빛이 프레임과 사진에 닿으면 어떤 일이 벌어질까?
공간의 강렬한 존재감에 압도되지 않으면서도 그 특성을 살리는 방법을 고민했다. 거칠고 낡은 보와 대비되는 깨끗한 기둥과 면을 만들었고, 상대적으로 가벼운 두께의 프레임을 선택했다.
천정에서 반복되는 삼각 구조가 만들어내는 소실점에서 벗어나기 위해 프레임의 축을 조정했다.
프레임을 바닥에서 띄워 관람객의 발길이 자연스럽게 드러나도록 했고, 프레임 사이로 다음 사진이 보이도록 해 거리와 속도에 따라 갑작스럽게 혹은 천천히 작품을 마주할 수 있도록 했다.
사진을 담은 프레임은 건축물의 기둥과 벽처럼 면과 선을 이루며 두 개의 다른 배경을 만들어냈다.
Seokundong, contemplating how to convey the urban and life fragments captured by three artists, envisioned an alleyway.
Perhaps, much like the artists themselves—sometimes by chance, sometimes by design—we imagined creating an alley where buildings emerge between paths, and each turn reveals a different scene.
We focused on the shadows cast as light filtered through the glass between rooftops, passing through the exposed wooden beams of the ceiling. What would happen when the ever-changing light, shifting in direction and form throughout the day, met the frames and photographs?
We sought a way to preserve the space’s strong presence without being overwhelmed by it. To achieve this, we juxtaposed rough, aged beams with clean columns and surfaces and chose relatively lightweight frames.
To break free from the vanishing point created by the repetitive triangular structure of the ceiling, we adjusted the axis of the frames.
By elevating the frames off the floor, we allowed visitors' footsteps to become visible, while positioning them so that glimpses of the next photographs could be seen in between. This way, viewers could encounter the works suddenly or gradually, depending on their distance and pace.
The frames holding the photographs functioned like architectural pillars and walls, creating two distinct backgrounds—one defined by surfaces, the other by lines.
