2025년 8월 서울 토탈미술관에서 개최된 《uni form: Broken Twill》은 패션과 현대예술의 경계를 넘나들며 ‘유니폼’이라는 사회적 구조를 재해석한 전시였다. 이 전시는 패션 디자이너이자 현대미술 작가인 최철용(Chul Yong CHOI)의 회화 시리즈를 중심으로 구성되었지만, 기획자, 디자이너, 연구자, 미디어 전문가로 구성된 코어그룹(Core Group)이 함께 참여하며 개인전의 형식을 넘어서는 새로운 전시 기획 모델을 제안했다.
즉, 《uni form》은 작가 개인의 조형언어를 보여주는 자리가 아니라, ‘유니폼’이라는 개념을 사회·문화·기술적 맥락에서 심화 연구하는 협업적 플랫폼으로 작동했다. 기획 단계부터 연구, 철학/미학, 매거진, 디자인, 공간 구성, 데이터 수집까지 각 분야의 전문가들이 참여함으로써 개인전의 형식을 빌린 집단적 리서치 전시라는 새로운 가능성을 제시했다.
이러한 특징들은 《uni form》이 단발성 개인전이 아니라, 동시대 담론을 지속적으로 확장해 나가는
랫폼적 구조를 지니고 있음을 보여준다. ‘유니폼’이라는 주제를 통해 집단과 개인, 규율과 자유, 제도와 감정 사이의 관계를 탐구한 이 전시는, 결과적으로 예술을 통해 ‘사회적 구조를 사유하는 실험적 장(場)’을 제안했다.
The exhibition “uni form: Broken Twill,” (uni form) held at Total Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul in August 2025, crossed the boundaries of fashion, art, and technology to reinterpret the social structure of the ‘uniform.’ Although the exhibition was centered on the painting series of fashion designer and contemporary artist Chul Yong CHOI, it also involved a Core Group consisting of curators, designers, researchers, and media specialists, proposing a new curatorial model that transcends the typical format of a solo exhibition.
“uni form” functioned not merely as a presentation of an individual artist’s visual language but as a collaborative platform that deepened the study of the uniform concept within social, cultural, and technological contexts. Experts from various disciplines participated in every stage of the project — from research, philosophy, and design to spatial composition and data collection —
offering a new possibility of a collective research-based exhibition that borrows the form of a solo show.To further explore the theme, the exhibition also included a number of invited works. Centered around a single artist, it constructed a multilayered structure of discourse that expanded and reinterpreted the subject from various perspectives, earning recognition for its freshness and experimental approach.
